Peripheral Retinal Abnormalities and Retinal Detachment in Pathologic Myopia
Abstract
Pathological myopia is associated with changes in various structures of the eye, primarily the retina. Peripheral retinal degenerations are common findings in patients, and serious vision loss can develop as a result of retinal detachment, whether or not it occurs on a background of degeneration. The dynamic interaction between the retina and the vitreous plays an important role in the formation of degenerations and the development of retinal detachment with tears. A careful retinal examination that evaluates all quadrants during patient check-ups can prevent permanent vision loss by conducting risk analyses for observed degenerations and holes and taking appropriate precautions.
