Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy: Ocular Genetics
Abstract
Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) is an inherited optic neuropathy characterized by painless central vision loss caused by mitochondrial DNA mutations. Diagnosis is established through clinical evaluation supported by genetic analysis. Novel treatment approaches such as idebenone and gene therapy show promise in slowing the progression of vision loss. Genetic counseling and healthy lifestyle modifications play an important role in long-term patient management.
