Treatment and Management Strategy of Cataract in Behçet's Disease

Cataracts are a common cause of vision loss in patients with Behçet's disease. When considering cataract surgery in these patients, ocular inflammation must be inactive for at least 3 months.. After detailed examination, the use of perioperative topical and systemic steroids together with immunosuppressive drugs is very important in controlling postoperative inflammation. Phacoemulsification surgery and acrylic hydrophobic intraocular lens should be preferred in cataract surgery. Rapid and aggressive treatment is required in cases of excessive postoperative inflammation, cystoid macular edema, hypotony, and increased intraocular pressure. If perioperative inflammation is treated appropriately and there is no problem in the posterior pole (optic atrophy, macular atrophy, etc.), good visual results can be obtained after cataract surgery.
