Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment and Cataract: Treatment Strategies and Current Approaches

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is the most frequently encountered form of retinal detachment. In cases where cataract coexists, media opacities may obscure small retinal breaks or hinder complete release of vitreoretinal traction in the peripheral retina. When retinal visualization is compromised, the decision to perform cataract and retinal detachment surgeries either sequentially or in combination depends largely on the surgeon’s experience and clinical judgment. Particularly in RRD cases with macular involvement, a meticulous biometric evaluation prior to cataract surgery is essential to minimize the risk of postoperative myopic refractive errors.
